RattleGuard users -- question/problem

My truck bed recently got wet and some of the water sat on it for a couple of days. This morning I'm seeing about 30 or so little "rust dots" on it. I'm trying to figure out if I got bad coverage or if the stuff doesn't create a solid barrier. The underlying floor is raw steel as opposed to a painted bed floor that was scuffed, but I would think that the stuff should create an impenetrable barrier as you wouldn't want water getting under it whether it was previously painted or not.

Has anyone else seen this problem?? I'm contacting the supplier to see what they think as well.

I'd be interested in the results too, I've got a few area's that I just cleaned/buffed then sprayed 3m undercoating on which I assume is close to the same thing?

RattleGuard is the bedliner that was discussed a while back. It is a catalyzed material, so quite a bit different than the 3M undercoating.

I would assume you did all the surface prep properly, no oils or anything like that, but Im sure you already know, perhaps it didnt stick good enough, or you had tiny bubbles in the mixutre allowing pinholes to develop

I coated all my raw steel with etching primer before applying the Rattleguard on the underside of my cab. As well as any other parts that have been coated with Rattleguard, if they were "raw steel" then they were coated with epoxy primer beforehand.

Are the "rust dots" through the Rattleguard or on the surface?
Let us know how you make out with the manufacturer.

Nothing from the supplier yet. I'm starting to think he's just an ebay seller rebadging somebody else's product.

I did study the areas a little closer this afternoon and it does indeed appear to be rust coming up from under the coating. What concerns me about this (other than the obvious problem of rust) is that this means the bed liner, or at least how I applied it, is NOT sealing the bed. That means that more water will get under it and more rust will likely occur... and even if I had primed the metal first it wouldn't have helped with this problem in the long run. I've gone over the application instructions repeatedly and don't think I did anything wrong (it's not rocket science in the first place). In the end, I may have to strip it all out and start over. Yikes!

I'll keep you posted.

i know for sure you should have primed the entire bed before applying. that is if it is a urethane liner like mine. it says there should be no bare metal showing. i saw at the paint shop the other day a new epoxy liner than can be applied over bare metal.

That's certainly possible. I'm not sure whether this is urethane or epoxy... it is catalyzed, but that would be true for either type.
